The name evokes an appeal to above, a spiritual call, a joyful noise. Which is why singer/songwiters Erica and Tina Atkins chose "Mary Mary" as their performance moniker. "We were thinking about the Mary's in the bible, particularly Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Both were very instrumental in Christ's ministries. It's all about Jesus and telling people who He is and of His love. That's the whole purpose behind Mary Mary. Born to gospel singing parents, Erica, who is slightly older, and Tina were raised in a strict churchgoing family in inglewood, California alongside 5 sisters and a brother. After singing back-up for a variety of singers, a chance meeting with Warryn Campbell in 1996 led to a collaboration between Campbell and the sisters. Mary Mary chose to sign with Columbia Records, the first gospel act to be signed to that label. They define themselves as strictly gospel-and not just inspirational-artists. "Inspirational music makes you feel good, like you can go on and make it; but the Gospel tells you what God can do and tells the good news of Jesus" explain the sisters. They have come a long way since then, releasing about 4 major albums and many more works. You know them, you love them, they are Mary Mary. Via: Gospel CityLabels: artists, Mary Mary |
